A new game announcement is making waves, though perhaps not for the reasons its developer hoped. Anime Life Sim, an upcoming PlayStation 5 title from Maksym Vysochanskyy, has drawn attention not just for its quirky premise but for its striking resemblance to Animal Crossing. Vysochanskyy, whose previous effort Dracula VS Monsters holds an unimpressive 1.64 user rating on the PlayStation Store, appears to have borrowed heavily from Nintendo’s iconic life sim series—maybe too heavily. The game is currently scheduled to release in 2026.
A Familiar Premise
According to its description, Anime Life Sim invites players to create their “perfect anime life” in a vibrant, animal-populated town. Players can befriend neighbors, customize homes, and enjoy activities like fishing, bug catching, gardening, and fossil hunting. There’s even dynamic weather, seasonal changes, and community-building elements such as running shops and organizing town events.
Despite the “anime” in its name, the game’s aesthetic and mechanics feel far closer to Animal Crossing than anything distinctly Japanese in style or tone. From the screenshots we’ve seen, it’s clear the gameplay leans heavily on the same core formula that made Nintendo’s series a hit: charming animal villagers, customizable homes, and a focus on day-to-day life in a cozy setting.
A Track Record That Raises Questions
While the concept sounds appealing to fans of life sims, Vysochanskyy’s development history casts doubt on whether Anime Life Sim can deliver on its promises. His prior title, Dracula VS Monsters, was widely criticized for its lack of polish and uninspired gameplay, leaving players skeptical about the quality of this new project.
Will Nintendo Take Notice?
The similarities to Animal Crossing are so blatant that it feels like a matter of time before Nintendo’s legal team takes a closer look. From the anthropomorphic neighbors to the seasonal events, Anime Life Sim walks a fine line between inspiration and replication. Whether this is intended as a heartfelt homage or a blatant attempt to capitalize on the success of its more famous counterpart remains unclear.
Release Details Still Pending
Anime Life Sim is currently set to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 in 2026, but we’ll see if it makes it that far.
