Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Original Concept Featured Kiryu as a Tuna Fisherman

PlayStation Blog recently interviewed the RGG Studio Director and the Like a Dragon series executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama about the upcoming Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

Several notable details were revealed, including how, around June or July 2023, the team was already thinking about an Infinite Wealth spinoff. One idea included Like a Dragon: Tuna, where Kiryu would be a tuna fisherman setting off to sea to fight against fishing boats. This idea eventually morphed into Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

Yokoyama also notes that Majima would have only worked as a protagonist if he had gone back in time or had amnesia, with the latter being applied. This was done to avoid discrepancies between how he and the player react and feel to developments.

You can view the full interview for additional comments.

The narrative seems to be at least somewhat tied to the events of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth based on some spoken details, but Majima sets out on a new pirate-themed adventure to reach Madlantis Island with a crew of his own to discover the Lost Treasure of the Esperanza. Further, this will be an action-adventure, and the stage will be Hawaii.

The game’s director is Ryosuke Horii. Majima will use the Mad Dog and Sea Dog combat styles, and you can jump during combat, which is a first for the series. It’s also worth noting that one can freely swap between the Mad Dog and Sea Dog styles.

During gameplay, players will also explore the open sea and discover new areas. One of the three central locations is Hawaii from Infinite Wealth, which will have plenty of minigames and substories.

The revealed minigames include Crazy Delivery, Dragon Kart, Minato Girls, and Karaoke. Nearly 200 items for outfit customization will also be available.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Windows on February 28, 2025, worldwide, for $59.99.
