The past few months have been particularly challenging for most of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have been forced to stay in their homes in order to try and stop the spread of the virus, leaving them with more free time than they know what to do with.
In an effort to support gamers around the world self quarantining, PlayStation has announced the “Play at Home Initiative.” In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, detailed the initiative to fans.
The initiative has two parts: giving free games to all fans of PlayStation and supporting independent developers that may be struggling during these strange economic times.
To keep people at home, PlayStation will be offering Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free to all PlayStation 4 players starting on April 15 at 8 p.m. PDT through May 5 at 8 p.m. PDT. In Germany and China, Knack 2 is being offered instead of The Nathan Drake Collection. These games are being provided separately from this month’s PlayStation Plus games.
Unlike PlayStation Plus games, once you claim Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection or Journey, they are yours to keep.
Ryan also announced the formation of a creative fund formed to support independent developers that may be financially struggling during the pandemic. PlayStation has earmarked $10 million for the fund. More information about the fund will be announced at a later date.
