Ys IX: Monstrum Nox Native PlayStation 5 Version Announced

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox Native PlayStation 5 Version Announced

As part of NIS America’s planned week of Falcom-related news, the publisher has announced that the developer’s action JRPG, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, will be receiving a native PlayStation 5 version in Spring 2023. It has been explicitly stated that unlike the upcoming native PlayStation 5 launch of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox will have no new features on PS5.

The company hopes this port will allow for a broader range of new players. All previously released cosmetic DLC will be included. However, there is no planned upgrade path from PS4 to PS5.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is currently available in the West for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Of course, like most of the PlayStation 4 library, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is already compatible with the PlayStation 5. However, the Western version of the game received a patch in May 2021 that added 4K resolution support on PlayStation 5. So, it’s at least safe to assume that this native launch will boast this implementation and a potentially increased frame rate.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is currently the latest chronological entry in the franchise, where the series protagonist, Adol Christin, is 24 years old. It follows the red-haired hero as he becomes a captive in the prison city of Balduq. Adol quickly becomes a supernatural entity known as a Monstrum, and he allies with those also “gifted” with the power. The group gradually unveils truths regarding the Romun Empire.

Ys IX is the fourth game in the series to utilize the party combat system, meaning that characters other than Adol are playable. In addition, every party member has a specific attack attribute (Strike, Slash, and Pierce) that is highly effective against varying enemies. Further, this entry embraces exploration more than any previous game.

“Have you ever had a dream where you weren’t you?
You were someone else?
It was in this prison where my dreams and my reality, once separate, became intertwined.”
– Adol Christin
