Yakuza Series Chief Director & Lyricist Requests Fans to Help “Baka Mitai” Reach 50 Million Listens
The chief director for the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, as well as the lyricist for the hit karaoke song “Baka Mitai’ has requested that the song hit 50 million listens on streaming services.
Ryōsuke Horii’s full statement is below, translated by our team’s Ryuji:
“One of my dreams is to have Baka Mitai to be listened to over 50 million times on subscription services so that it can get a Gold award from the Recording Association.* Currently, we just need a little over 10 million more listens, so can I ask for your guys’ strength?”
*TL Note: An award given to a song when it gets listened to enough times. The gold standard in Japan is when a song reaches 50 million listeners.
As that translation note states, 50 million listens are required for the Gold award from the Japan Recording Association, and just ten million are needed. That is a pretty high amount, but considering how popular this song has become online, it’s only a matter of time at this point.
