Graceful Decay and Annapurna Interactive have announced the puzzle-focused adventure game Uncanyon. The project reunites the teams behind the recursive puzzle game Maquette.
Players control Sonia, an outsider who arrives in Uncanyon looking for excitement. The setting was formed where multiple “unparallel realities” converged, creating a land that once supported its own civilization.
Although the story places Sonia in the familiar role of someone expected to save the setting, the team is also exploring the pressure that comes with those expectations. The development team drew from experiences involving family expectations and social media obligations when writing Sonia.
Players will explore temples and ruins containing mechanical traps, locks, and other obstacles left behind to protect what lies inside. As the adventure progresses, Sonia collects tools and other items that expand how she can interact with these spaces.
The central mechanic involves Reality Fragments and a substance called fragmentstone. Devices powered by fragmentstone let Sonia alter the reality around her. Activating them can change rooms in real time, move obstacles, remove hazards, or create previously inaccessible routes.
Players can stop universal transition partway through and explore spaces created from a mixture of realities. Some situations can even place Sonia within multiple realities simultaneously. A doorway blocked in one reality could become accessible in another, while changing states might introduce a different hazard elsewhere.
Uncanyon will be released in 2027 for PlayStation 5.
