GungHo Online Entertainment America has confirmed that it has no plans to use AI for the localization of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. The publisher says the scale of Falcom’s writing and the need to maintain character voices and terminology across the Trails series make human translators an essential part of the process.
Speaking in an interview with LEVEL UP, GungHo Online Entertainment America CEO Fumiaki Shiraishi and producer Matthias Pergams explained that the company’s localization work is handled manually. This extends beyond the translation itself, with several stages of review and editing performed before text reaches the finished game.
A major consideration is continuity. The Trails games feature a large recurring cast alongside terminology, titles, nicknames, and expressions that can carry across multiple entries. Human judgment is still necessary to maintain those details while preserving the individual speaking styles and personalities of characters.
The publisher is monitoring developments surrounding AI technology but does not expect it to substantially change its localization workflow in the foreseeable future. Even if AI were eventually introduced as an assisting tool, GungHo says translated text would still require multiple stages of human review, editing, and verification. As things currently stand, it has no plans to incorporate AI into its game localization.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter will be released worldwide on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam on September 17, 2026. A free demo with saved data transferance is also available.
