GKIDS announced they would host the theatrical premiere of The Colors Within for nationwide audiences in North America on January 24, 2024. A new trailer was released to give viewers a look at this truly incredible display of animation and storytelling. Also, let’s forget the soundtrack, which acts as a bond for these characters, but they still must navigate coming-of-age obstacles.
The Colors Within is the latest animated feature directed by Naoko Yamada, known for her acclaimed works like A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird. The film is produced by Science SARU, the studio behind Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Inu-Oh, and boasts a script by Reiko Yoshida (Violet Evergarden). The soundtrack is composed by Kensuke Ushio, whose previous collaborations with Yamada have resulted in emotionally resonant scores. The film’s production team is rounded out by Takashi Kojima as the character designer, ensuring the visual depth that complements the story.
The film follows Totsuko, a high school student with the ability to perceive the “colors” of people’s emotions. She encounters Kimi, whose color captivates her, and together with another student named Rui, they form a band despite Totsuko’s lack of musical experience. As they practice in a remote island church, their music brings them closer, forming deep friendships and navigating their own emotional landscapes. The Colors Within is a tale of discovering personal identity, connection, and the beauty of shared experience.
