Games don’t really need to have all sorts of new bells and whistles to be unique. However, there’s also the idea of having to innovate something if it’s literally been done millions of times. Gamevil’s latest mobile MMORPG Talion isn’t innovative by any means but does what it’s supposed to. While this doesn’t hold it back it in the long run, it does put a slight damper on any potential greatness.
Talion puts you in the role of either the Aegis, the Alliance of Shield Protection to fight for absolute freedom, or Bident, the Alliance of Flame Judgement, to grab absolute power. Demons are causing havoc across the land of Nar and it’s your job to get rid of them. Sound familiar? Between each faction, you can choose a warrior, a mage, or a gunslinger to step into the world with. I was pretty impressed with the visual customization options for your character as you can change up to 48 different components. It’s possible to make your character the angriest anime protagonist ever, or you can make a cute adorable mage who can conjure massive explosions.
I was a huge fan of the combat options for the gunslinger class. Plenty of high damage AOE skills, mobility, and even a blade if you have to get up close and personal. Think Lucian from League of Legends with his double pistols along with Akali’s knife. But because of the gunslinger’s playstyle, you can quickly get overwhelmed by hordes of enemies. Outside of fighting, quests, and sidequests, I was a bit disappointed there isn’t much else to do.
At the time of this review, there is an event related quest line involving the Ultraman franchise, but it isn’t that exciting. You get transported to a city to fight off bad guys from Ultraman, but I wasn’t that engaged. I let it auto-play and auto-quest without even looking at my screen. The same could be said about Nexon’s AxE: Alliance vs Empire or any of the more “serious” MMORPGs. It would be nice if some of these serious games could include some aspects of MapleStory or Tales of Wind with optional fun activities like quizzes, farming, and other things to earn items and ways to further expand the content.
Once I got into the world, I was stunned by how great the game looked. It could be that Gamevil touch as I’ve always thought they provided some of the best graphical design a mobile studio has to offer in the industry. At times, other MMORPG’s will have slightly choppy framerates on my iPhone8+, but I experienced none of that with Talion. Everything was crisp from gameplay to cutscenes. Dialogue is well written too. Nothing seems to overtly cheesy to pull me out of the experience.
The writers did a fantastic job of bringing you into this fantasy world without adding any unnecessary fourth wall breaking or the occasionally odd (but sometimes welcomed) tsundere character I’ve actually seen in games like this. One thing that somewhat catches me off guard is whenever you log back in, for whatever reason the camera is zoomed in right on your character’s face creepily staring back at you. The sound design is what you would expect from these medieval MMORPGs, almost similar to the Lord of the Rings franchise. It helps with the immersion…somewhat.
As I’ve mentioned before, there is an auto-battle and auto-quest feature. Luckily, combat is fun and fluid enough for me to not want auto-battle on. But I’ll gladly accept auto quest since walking from place to place can become tedious. There’s even a roll function to help you get out of sticky situations, but for some reason, you’re only limited to three rolls that go on cooldown every time you use it. The general UI during gameplay is a bit cluttered, though. There are quite a few buttons and text boxes taking up a majority of the space that I found myself focused directly on the center of the screen a lot to pay attention to what I was doing. It, unfortunately, kind of disrupted up my concentration during all the great combat that was going on.
There are also other activities like guild and alliance support, dungeons, and PVP options that many players of this genre will be familiar with. But really other than what I just mentioned… that’s about it. Talion boasts a 20 versus 20, realm-versus-realm (RvR) with modes like Deathmatch, Team Battle, Occupy (where players try to capture points on a map with the help of catapults to drive enemies off). The problem with the PVP options is that it takes a ridiculous amount of time to even unlock them. Tales of Wind gave you plenty of these same features in a much shorter time frame.
I haven’t experienced anything exactly groundbreaking about Talion to keep me wanting to play consistently. I may be a bit jaded by my previous experience with Nexon’s AxE: Alliance vs. Empire, but at least that game kept me interested with a bit cleaner experience in terms of a slightly better UI and I’ve sunk quite a bit of time into it. Talion is a proper and typical MMORPG.
I can’t give you an exact reason as to why you should play Talion over any other games in the space other than the Gamevil polish when it comes to art design. Don’t get me wrong it’s still good, but so are the 100s of mobile MMORPGs in the market that do practically the same thing. Even with the fluid combat and great art and sound design, Talion is a solid MMORPG that might be too familiar for fans.
