Takashi Iizuka Discusses Sonic Frontiers Freedom & Design

IGN has shared more coverage on the upcoming Sonic Frontiers, with Sonic Team’s chief creative officer, Takashi Iizuka, providing insight regarding the title’s design philosophy. Throughout the video, he continually emphasizes freedom, with Frontiers’ conceptual design revolving around moving forward from the limited linearity previous Sonic games have had.

The atmosphere was also purposefully approached differently, with somber mystery encapsulating the setting due to Sonic’s separation from his friends. In addition, the team wants players to discover and experience the story alongside Sonic himself, creating a sense of genuine discovery. Iizuka then states how they’re aiming to please the varied fanbase, from those who have become adults to youths who enjoyed the films. Sonic Origins’ upcoming release is part of that strategy to appease classic fans and introduce newer fans to Sonic’s roots.

Lastly, he reiterates that he’d like to “continue the Sonic Adventure series at some point,” with the work on Frontiers acting as a base for a potential upcoming sequel.
