Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Gets Dragon Quest DLC and a Massive Free Update Later Today

A Hero draws near! Later today, Hero from the Dragon Quest series will officially be available to enter the battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo revealed today via a video featuring Super Smash Bros. Ultimate designer Masahiro Sakurai. To be honest, this news is a great surprise as the character was revealed during Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct that happened in June, just last month.

Anyway, not only does the video show Hero in action, but it also reveals the Yggdrasil’s Altar stage and even multiple orchestrated music tracks from classic Dragon Quest games that fans know and love.

For those that already have the Fighters Pass (which can be purchased for $24.99), Hero, along with the additional Dragon Quest series content, will be available to download for free. If you happen to not have the Fighters Pass, you can get the character, stage, and music by purchasing the Challenger Pack 2 separately for $5.99.

This update marks yet another major update for the game, but also is another major accomplishment for Nintendo as Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing went into detail about this via a press release:

“With the introduction of fan-favorite characters like Hero from the Dragon Quest series to the game’s expanding roster, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to assemble the largest cast of iconic video game characters ever. We love being able to engage Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans through a steady release of exciting downloadable content, and look forward to continuing to expand on players’ game experiences on Nintendo Switch beyond launch.”

Going back to the video, though, it features Super Smash Bros. Ultimate designer Masahiro Sakurai who discusses the game’s latest DLC fighter. Sakurai-san highlights Hero’s move set, and goes over, in detail, every single move he has.

Furthermore, the new character will also come with additional character designs that represent the main characters from multiple games in the Dragon Quest series. Hero can take the form of protagonists from Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition, the upcoming Dragon Quest title coming to Switch on September 27; Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen; and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation. This is the first time ever that all four heroes from these Dragon Quest games are fighting together.

Along with the release of Hero later today, a massive free software update to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will also be available, which adds an in-game online tournament mode, a “Very Easy” setting in the single-player Adventure mode, a Spectate mode, among other features.

Check out Hero in all of his glory, thanks to Sakurai-san, by watching the video below:
