During Gamescom 2026, Sega and RGG Studio unveiled roughly 12 new minutes of gameplay footage for their upcoming story-driven adventure game Stranger Than Heaven.
This gameplay demo features three eras and strongly emphasizes its distinctive combat system, which features careful maneuverability and limb-specific controls.
The title follows the protagonist, Makoto Daito, across five decades of Japanese history, from 1915 to 1965. Makoto, born to an American father and Japanese mother, loses both parents early in life before stowing away on a ship bound for Japan.
Stranger Than Heaven occurs in five locations inspired by real Japanese cities: Kokura in Fukuoka, Kure in Hiroshima, Minami in Osaka, Atami in Shizuoka, and finally Shinjuku in Tokyo. Each chapter takes place during a different historical period and introduces new criminal factions and entertainment districts.
Makoto possesses strong musical talent, and players can collect environmental sounds from around the world to create original songs later in the game. Sounds like trains, sweeping brooms, or even combat impacts can be recorded and turned into compositions during dedicated music creation. During combat, players independently control Makoto’s left and right limbs using the shoulder triggers.
Stranger Than Heaven will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, and PC via Steam on January 15, 2027.
