Square Enix Working on Restructuring Game Development Significantly

Square Enix’s representative director and president, Takashi Kiryu, made a major statement regarding the company’s continued video game development for the foreseeable future. During the latest financial results call for analysts, held on February 5, 2024, Bloomberg Japan reported a statement from Kiryu, saying that they intend on a new development structure to enhance the quality of their titles.

Details on this plan won’t be revealed in a greater capacity until Spring. Still, according to some who attended the conference, this structure will be initiated during April 2024, which will include “a new system of checks to judge the quality of games at earlier stages of development.”

“We are performing a zero-base review to determine what kind of organizational structure is necessary to realize the contents of our pipeline, and which approach is best.”

We’ll keep you all updated on this substantial restructuring from Square Enix.

Previously, President Kiryu stated that he wants Square Enix to work more on their HD catalog and, depending on the IP, upgrade it to AAA status. Consequently and speculatively, this could imply fewer releases per year, though at what the teams consider to be of greater quality. Specific IPs weren’t named.
