Square Enix President Wants To See More Older Games Remade In HD-2D Style

The Square Enix Japan Youtube channel started a new series called “Asano Team Development Room Radio”. Our team’s Ryuji, translated the following comments from Famitsu’s article and tweet pertaining to this show.

For Episode #0, the main focus was on the upcoming tactical JRPG, Triangle Strategy. In addition, however, the highly anticipated Live A Live is also briefly mentioned.

Famitsu pointed out a comment from the episode, which is Asano, the developer, mentioning that an order from Square Enix’s president was that he wants to see more of this “HD-2D” technology in use for future games.

One such game that Square chose to give a crack at remaking with the HD-2D technology was Live A Live. Asano then continues that after a long list of candidates, the chosen one was Live A Live, with ActRaiser being the second game that was considered.

Read our staff’s writer featured on why Live A Live matters.

Live A Live was initially released only in Japan for the Super Famicom in 1994. It is unique as a JRPG title as it is effectively seven smaller games that take place across different settings and time periods, with two unlockable scenarios that tie the stories together.

The title gained a following outside of Japan thanks to a fan translation that was among the earliest widely-shared complete patches, despite being considered to be a sales failure in its home country. The title has (again, exclusively in Japan) also been re-released through the Virtual Console service on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Live A Live is releasing for Nintendo Switch worldwide on July 22, 2022.
