Square Enix has revealed that Teruki Endo, the Battle Director behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, will host a panel during the 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC). Titled “The Challenges in Developing an Innovative Battle System for ‘Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth,‘ the session will explore the challenges and design philosophies involved in transforming the classic RPG’s turn-based combat into a modern hybrid of action and strategy.
This panel promises attendees valuable insights into the development team’s mindset and the creative processes that shaped the critically acclaimed battle systems of Final Fantasy VII Remake and its sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The session is designed to engage game designers of all experience levels, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at how Square Enix reimagined one of gaming’s most iconic mechanics while preserving the spirit of the original.
