Sonic Superstars Producer & Creative Officer Interview Discusses Development
During the latest Sonic Central broadcast, Sonic Superstars Producer and original Sonic character designer Naoto Ohshima and Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka provided a brief interview elucidating some aspects of the upcoming 2.5D platformer.
The challenges of making a brand-new classic Sonic adventure, such as implementing 2D gameplay in a 3D world, the reason for Fang’s inclusion, and why the four-player couch co-op was included are all discussed. Further, the new character’s design is brought up, with the effort to convey their personality through their design done by creating a “mark,” a representation of them. These comments from Ohshima seem to be his general design process for characters, too.
None of these answers are necessarily profoundly thought-provoking, but they do provide a neat bit of insight into the development of this title.

Sonic Superstars is a brand-new 2D adventure featuring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, taking place on the North Star Islands. New gameplay features include the Emerald Powers when Chaos Emeralds are acquired, such as enabling the ability to create clones or climb waterfalls.
Further, the visuals have received a notable upgrade, and Fang the Sniper from older Sonic the Hedgehog comics and video games, such as Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, will appear as an antagonist in Sonic Superstars.
Classic Sonic the Hedgehog designer Naoto Oshima has returned with a brand new villain. Fans can also anticipate “movements, physics, and controls feel familiar and appeal to recent and legacy fans alike.” Local four-player co-op will be available throughout the entire story, too.
