During today’s Sonic Central broadcast, Sega shared a quick preview for Sonic Frontiers’ animated prologue featuring Knuckles. Unfortunately, nothing notable occurs throughout this very brief segment aside from it being fully revealed later this year. Further, brief new footage of the game was shown with Sonic pursuing enemies in the air, and not much else.
IGN recently hosted their hands-on preview event regarding Sonic Frontiers’ story, stating that the game begins with Sonic, Tails, and Amy flying through a wormhole. Sonic is then separated from his friends, and he finds himself stranded on an island. However, an AI-like voice begins speaking to him and alerts him to find the chaos emeralds. Light Speed Dashing has been confirmed alongside parrying. Races from point A to point B have also been lightly discussed, with the open-zone design greatly complementing it. The EXP progression and skill tree system are mentioned with there being an immense variety for Sonic’s combative toolkit.
Portal Gears are discussed next, which are obtained from defeating bosses. These lead to linear stages, hearkening back to older Sonic titles. Optional goals are present here too, and reward Vault Keys, leading to Chaos Emeralds.
