Slay the Princess has officially surpassed one million units sold, developer Black Tabby Games announced this week. The milestone follows the release of The Pristine Cut across consoles and PC and marks a major moment for the studio’s breakout visual novel. In case you missed it, check out our review.
In a message shared with fans, co-creators Tony Howard-Arias and Abby Howard spoke candidly about what the achievement means to them, especially given the genre’s reputation. “Visual novels are an often dismissed and looked down upon part of our industry,” the developers said, noting that reaching one million sales alongside strong critical and audience reception was something they “previously thought to be impossible.”
First released on PC before expanding to PlayStation and Xbox platforms, Slay the Princess is a narrative-driven horror visual novel built around repeated deaths, branching choices, and unreliable perspectives. You’re tasked with killing a princess locked away in a remote cabin, but every decision reshapes the story and the characters involved. The game is fully voiced and features multiple endings designed around replaying key moments rather than restarting from scratch.
The announcement also served as a lead-in to what’s next for the studio. The penultimate chapter of Scarlet Hollow is set to release in 11 days. If you haven’t started it yet, the first chapter is available for free as a demo on Steam, with progress carrying over into the full version.
Black Tabby Games also teased upcoming merchandise in collaboration with Fangamer, currently planned for late spring or early summer. No specific items were detailed, but the studio indicated this is just one of several projects in the works.
Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on October 24, 2024.
