Shenmue I & II Shows Jiu Jitsu Combat in Continued Video Series

Sega released Part 3 of their video series showing extended Shenmue I & II gameplay while providing details to catch players up to speed on the classic adventure game.

Titled “Combat & Mini-Games”, this new video lets the viewer know that there is more to the game than interviewing residents and seeking revenge. Players will quickly learn that the main protagonist Ryo Hazuki is a Jiu-Jitsu master-in-training.

Throughout the game, Ryo will learn more complex fighting moves as he levels up. These moves will also transfer from the first title to the next by using the Save Data. Enemies will become tougher in later parts of the game so mastering these moves will be beneficial to the player. Some of these encounters have the player take part in quick time events, which was brand new at the time the game launched in 1999.

Additionally, players will be able to get away from all the fighting and unwind at the local arcades. Players will be able to play Space Harrier and Afterburner or even enter in forklift race.

In case you missed it, check out the Shenmue’s story in Part 1 of the video series and characters in Part 2.

Shenmue I & II will launch on August 21 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC-via Steam.

Author’s take: This video series was needed because I had forgotten about all the cool stuff that players can sink their time into while playing Shenmue. I used to be terrible at pulling off QTEs back in the day, so we’ll see if I’ve gotten any better in the last 15 years.
