Nearly a decade after its original launch in 2016, RWBY: Grimm Eclipse has made its way to a new platform. Developer FarBridge has released RWBY: Grimm Eclipse Special Edition for Google Play Games on Windows.
Originally developed by Rooster Teeth Games and based on the RWBY animated series created by Monty Oum, Grimm Eclipse blends online co-op action with a fully voiced, canon story set in the world of Remnant. This Special Edition is being published globally in partnership with VIZ Media, who currently oversees the broader RWBY brand.
Optimized for PC via Google Play Games
The new release arrives with native support for Windows via Google Play Games, allowing players to jump into online four-player co-op combat directly from the platform. Limited free gameplay is available, with additional content offered through in-app purchases.
According to FarBridge CEO Patrick Curry, this marks one of the first native Windows titles launched through Google’s platform. “It’s been thrilling to work alongside VIZ Media and Google to bring this edition of RWBY: Grimm Eclipse to new audiences,” Curry said.
Canon Content and Familiar Faces
RWBY: Grimm Eclipse Special Edition features a story fully integrated into the series’ canon, with voiceover from the original cast and a soundtrack composed by RWBY’s longtime composer. During gameplay, players take on waves of enemies using the show’s distinct weapon-based combat while playing as Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, and other familiar characters.
The move to reintroduce Grimm Eclipse on a modern PC platform comes after years of cross-media growth for the franchise. Originally released in Early Access back in 2015 before launching in full in 2016, the title has since appeared on consoles and mobile devices in various forms. The Special Edition follows a similar formula while introducing performance improvements and ongoing updates under FarBridge’s stewardship.
“We’re excited to entrust FarBridge with the ongoing updates and publishing of RWBY: Grimm Eclipse,” said Geoff Yetter, Director of International & Growth Business at VIZ Media.
A Franchise with Long Legs
RWBY debuted in 2013 and has since grown into a multimedia franchise, including multiple spinoffs, manga adaptations, and crossover projects with properties like Justice League. Its international success helped establish it as a rare U.S.-produced anime with a strong following in both Western and Japanese markets.
