Developer Gotcha Gotcha Games has opened the Steam page for RPG Maker U2U, showcasing new screenshots and details about its development tools, including support for creating games with 2.5D environments.
RPG Maker U2U introduces a P2D Map Editor designed to create environments combining 2D RPG Maker assets with greater depth and verticality. Developers can place pre-made objects, assemble their own objects, and decorate environments using traditional 2D map tiles. More than 100 pre-built P2D maps will also be included.
P2D environments support eight-direction movement. Existing four-direction character sprites can automatically be used for diagonal movement, reducing the need to create additional character assets.
Vertical environments are another focus of the new mapping system. Maps can incorporate stairs, slopes, ladders, overpasses, and underpasses, allowing areas to span multiple elevations.
RPG Maker U2U will also be distributed as a standalone application through Steam. Users will not need to install Unity, Unity Hub, or create a Unity ID to use the software.
Several existing RPG Maker MZ concepts carry over to U2U. Its Event editor, database, and battle settings follow similar workflows, and newly released screenshots provide an early look at the Event Editor and Database/Actor panel.
The developer has also revealed the first key visual. Japanese illustrator Namaniku ATK created its character design and illustration.
Additional development information is being shared through producer letters published on the RPG Maker U2U Steam page and official social account.
