Live Action ‘Root Letter’ Film Gets New Trailer for its September Release

Well, the visual novel genre has come a long way with the upcoming theatrical release of the live-action adaptation of Root Letter. The film is set to release on September 1, 2022, in select theaters and on-demand.

Based on the adventure visual novel from Kadokawa Games, the story follows Carlos, played by Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), who has had a troubled upbringing as he attempts to reconnect with a friend named Sarah, played by Keana Marie (Netflix’s Dash & Lily). They were school pen pals, but he decides to find her after receiving a letter that she has killed someone.

The story turns into an investigation thriller as Carlos travels to Sarah’s hometown to understand what’s actually going on. It seems that Sarah’s friends know a lot more than they are willing to share, but with Sarah missing, Carlos will have to piece together the events.

Root Letter is directed by award-winning and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Sonja O’Hara (Mid-Century, Doomsday), and written by Tribeca Film Festival-winning screenwriter David Ebeltoft (Here Alone, the upcoming Blood for Dust).

You can watch the streaming trailer below to see all the action. No, it’s not based in Japan, which is probably where some viewers might stop watching, but it is still cool to see visual novels getting this type of attention.
