During today’s State of Play, Sony Interactive Entertainment released new gameplay from the Housemarque-developed third-person shooter Returnal, coming to PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2021.
Returnal gameplay, players can dash and shoot enemies in third-person shooting combat. The game mimics a shmup where waves of bullets rain on the player. However, death isn’t all that bad. Every time you die, the world will change, and the environment will change. Players will also have access to different alt-fire and mysterious devices that will change their playstyle during any given run. The game features the developer’s roguelike gameplay style as players take on the role of Selene, a space pilot lost in this alien-filled world.
There’s also a mysterious narrative that plays out where the player will discover her past memories and the nightmare that she’s lived through. Players will discover some horrific moments in this section as the game switch to first-person, and players will interact with the environment and unlock secrets. The game also takes advantage of the DualSence controller providing haptic feedback during the more action-oriented sections.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the development of Returnal. Housemarque is known for Nex Machina and Alienation as well as the PS4 launch title Resogun.
