One Piece Odyssey Producer Open to Consider a Sequel; Still Wants to Release Games Across Other Genres

One Piece Odyssey is the first entry in the One Piece series of games in a while to take on the RPG genre. This is exciting for fans who wish to have a more immersive narrative experience in the One Piece world while being able to have a direct effect on exploration and leveling up the cast of iconic characters.

During an interview with One Piece Odyssey Producer Rei Hirata, we decided to ask if Odyssey would be made into a series.

Hirata shared, “First and foremost, it’s my belief that trying to recreate the One Piece experience in one single genre, in this case, it being a JRPG, is probably impossible because the series is so immense. My plan is to release more games across different genres so that we can provide different experiences all around.”

He continued, “On the other hand, we listen to a lot of feedback from fans, so when taking a sequel into account, it will come down to reception and how fans feel about the game. It’s something that we’re open to considering after One Piece Odyssey releases and we get more feedback.”

So, it looks like we might be seeing a follow-up entry in this RPG style following the release. As a fan, I’m hoping to see more RPGs based on One Piece as it just seems to work well in terms of a storytelling standpoint, which is what I enjoy most about the series.

One Piece Odyssey is an adventure RPG where players will experience a new adventure with the Straw Hat Pirates. The game will feature new characters and monster designs by Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece. Further, music is being handled by Motoi Sakuraba, who is known for the Dark Souls and Tales series.

One Piece Odyssey is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam on January 13, 2023.
