Pokémon Sword and Shield Has Highest-Grossing Launch of the Series in the US

Nintendo announced that Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield has sold more than 6 million units worldwide during its launch weekend, making it one of the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch games ever. Additionally, the monster-catching RPG sold over 2 million copies in the US alone, making it the highest-grossing launch of and Pokémon game.

“This past weekend, millions of people began their Pokémon journeys through the new Galar region,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With such a momentous launch, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield have proven to be two of the must-have games this holiday season.”

Since the series’ global launch with  Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version games in 1996, the series has sold more than 240 million units worldwide.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield take place in a new region known as the Galar region, which is filled with the countryside, city, and snow-covered environments. Players will also be able to choose from new starter Pokémon Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble as they work towards becoming a Pokemon Champion. The game will feature online components as well where players are able to camp and compare Pokémon.
