Publisher Prototype has announced that the Switch release of the otome visual novel Chou no Doku Hana no Kusari will be updated with an English translation in October under the title of Butterfly’s Poison; Blood Chains. In addition to the digital download version, the out-of-print physical edition will be re-released with English and Japanese text options. Furthermore, compared to the R18 PC version, the console release has sex scenes removed, but additional romantic scenes and artwork added.
Originally released for PC in 2011 by developer Aromarie, Chou no Doku Hana no Kusari stars Yuriko, a noblewoman in the Taishou era who’s about to be forced into an arranged marriage. The story is a dark soap operatic romance featuring five love interests — including Yuriko’s childhood friend who’s facing an arranged marriage of his own, her family’s loyal half-British butler, and her womanizing artist older brother — featuring a variety of bad endings, and a few happy ones.
Chou no Doku Hana no Kusari was previously released in English in 2020 on Android and iOS by publisher Abracadabra. However, the release was criticized for its poor translation quality, removal of voice acting, and predatory mobile game pricing. As a result, it was removed from sale less than a year later. Hopefully, Prototype’s translation will see more success with the English otome community.
