Bandai Namco has shared a Developer Diary regarding their upcoming turn-based JRPG, One Piece Odyssey. Producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki, composer Motoi Sakuraba, and Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief Ken Takano. Several generalities about the game aiming to capture the essence of One Piece are stated, along with the crucial phrase “Let’s travel to the heart of memories,” somehow being at the core of the experience.
It’s then revealed that the development began roughly five years ago, while promotion and production for the musou game Pirate Warriors 4 occurred. Production was about halfway done, with the script completed. Additionally, this process began when the Whole Cake Island arc was happening in the manga’s serialization.
Oda, the creator of One Piece, designed two original characters for this game, Adio and Lim. Several new animals were also made by Oda, such as the Dry Penguin and Leviathan. Summatively, significant time was spent trying to make the title feel instilled with One Piece’s aesthetic identity.
The gameplay is then discussed, with every playable character having field actions correlating to their skill sets. For example, Luffy can reach distant areas with his limbs, Zoro can cut open blockades, and Chopper can enter narrow spaces other characters can’t.
One facet of the turn-based combat is Scramble Area Battles, comprising several areas where all combatants will be randomly assigned, requiring players to understand and experiment with the cast’s techniques. Another mechanic is Dramatic Scene, which contextually impacts party members, such as Sanji’s inability to attack if women surround him.
Sakuraba then speaks about how joyous he felt about the project, with the staff’s excitement further motivating him. He also notes that composing the main theme was the most challenging aspect.
