Bandai Namco has shared a new 7-minute English gameplay trailer of their upcoming turn-based JRPG, One Piece Odyssey, highlighting the iconic region of Alabasta from the pre-timeskip era.
Players are revealed as able to swap between controllable characters during their explorations of towns, alongside it being required to get past certain character-specific obstacles, such as Chopper crawling through tight spaces. Further, character banter will occur, faithfully depicting the primary cast. Side stories are one of the central reasons players will be on the field aside from the main quest.
As previously unveiled, battles are turn-based, though there are specific properties to consider. There are Power, Speed, and Technique advantages, with damage enhanced by characters with a type advantage. Of course, everyone has their own skills with varying ranges, applications, and more. Items are useable in typical RPG fashion too.
Scramble Area Battles find characters placed on different areas of the map, where they’re on their own and have to play to their strengths to survive. Another unique element is Dramatic Scenes, which seem to be brief instances of random dialogue dependent on the party setup, ultimately granting increased experience at the end of a bout.

One Piece Odyssey is an adventure RPG where players will experience a new adventure with the Straw Hat Pirates. The game will feature new characters and monster designs by Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece. Further, music is being handled by Motoi Sakuraba, who is known for the Dark Souls and Tales series.
Oda, the creator of One Piece, designed two original characters for this game, Adio and Lim. Several new animals were also made by Oda, such as the Dry Penguin and Leviathan. Summatively, significant time was spent trying to make the title feel instilled with One Piece’s aesthetic identity.
One facet of the turn-based combat is Scramble Area Battles, comprising several areas where all combatants will be randomly assigned, requiring players to understand and experiment with the cast’s techniques. Another mechanic is Dramatic Scene, which contextually impacts party members, such as Sanji’s inability to attack if women surround him.
One Piece Odyssey is launching for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam on January 13, 2023.
