Netflix Acquires Oxenfree Developer Night School Studio
Earlier today, Netflix released a statement announcing it acquired the Oxenfree 1 and 2 developer, Night School Studio. This acquisition is the first of many, as Netflix promises to recruit more industry-leading developers to create games for their service. No word has been said how they plan to deliver the games, but it is safe to say that it would be streamed through the service itself.
Oxenfree 2 has also been promised to be still worked on despite the acquisition. So don’t expect any news on the first game developed for Netflix anytime soon, as they are focusing on releasing Oxenfree 2 first. Although in the statement, they specifically pointed out that players can enjoy their games without ads and in-app purchases and will be part of the Netflix subscription.
Regardless of how you feel, a big player stepping into game development can cause a massive splash. Although whether or not this splash will be for the better remains to be seen. We will be keeping our eyes on this and report any news as it is announced.
You can view the complete official statement regarding this Netflix acquisition from Night School Studio’s website. They remark about this opportunity with Netflix allowing them to expand their creative vision.
