Metaphor: ReFantazio Creators Detail the Royal Election, Archetypes & Travel System

Atlus uploaded an English version of the Metaphor: ReFantazio Creator’s Voice video featuring Director Katsura Hashino, Character Designer Shigenori Soejima, and Composer Shoji Meguro. The trio discussed various facets of the title.

Magic in the world of Metaphor: ReFantazio requires the usage of a special piece of equipment. While magic was once born from one’s imagination, time has diluted that notion, with it now having more restrictions. This has birthed a reliance on magical tools. However, the main characters can transform into weapons known as Archetypes. Forged connections will eventually unlock dormant Archetypes.

After the kingdom’s king dies, an election of sorts begins, which is where the narrative of the game starts. Anyone can become king if they become the most popular, with every prospective ruler having distinctions for their motivations and behaviors. Those currently in power frame the election as a competition so they can emphasize their own rule and maintain their current control.

The protagonist becomes involved in this election race, and as the story unfolds, he travels the country to gather support. The team is trying to combine a grounded and realistic travel experience with a more “serious and mysterious” main story. Time and travel play crucial parts in the experience. During the time left between gaining support for the election, the strategy and order are left up to the player.

Regarding the action combat, players have complete freedom in determining and choosing if they want to engage in that or turn-based encounters after assessing their opponents.

The soundtrack of Metaphor: ReFantazio is quite varied, given the characters’ different races, affiliations, and faiths. Meguro describes it as elaborate, giving it a different approach than the Persona series.

Hashino stated that he wants to bring demos of Metaphor: ReFantazio to countries around the world.

Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in the United Kingdom of Euchronia, a land plunged into turmoil following the assassination of its king. The story takes a dramatic turn when the Royal Magic, a mystical power previously known only to the king, is unexpectedly invoked, sparking a grand royal tournament to determine the next ruler.

Amidst this tumultuous backdrop, the protagonist, alongside their partner, the fairy Galica, embarks on a quest to lift a curse cast upon the prince, believed by the kingdom to be deceased. Their journey spans the expansive lands of Euchronia, revealing that their mission is intricately tied to the ongoing tournament for the throne. To succeed, they must forge alliances with a diverse array of friends and followers from the various tribes that inhabit this world, each with their own unique contributions to the unfolding narrative.

Metaphor: ReFantazio was also known as Project Re Fantasy for several years. The game is being developed by the team behind Persona 3Persona 4, and Persona 5. This truly does look like a next-generation JRPG experience. It’s also taken notes from the Shin Megami Tensei series. The director is Katsura Hashino, and the composer is Shoji Meguro.

Director Katsura Hashino stated in a previous message that this game is a third pillar for Atlus. One key phrase for the game is “Facing your fear.” Character designer Shigenori Soejima said they wanted an androgynous and heroic protagonist. Composer Shoji Meguro confirmed the game uses a score inspired by hymns and Buddhist prayers in its soundtrack.

The combat of Metaphor: ReFantazio will feature shifting from action to turn-based like Nihon Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak, known as Kuro no Kiseki in Japan.

Metaphor: ReFantazio will launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in Fall 2024.
