OK, I’m still reeling over this particular piece of news. But developer and publisher Cygames has officially announced that through an agreement, all of the rights and the Metal Max IP, owned previously by Kadokawa and its subsidiary Kadokawa Games, will now be fully transferred over to Cygames. This means that the company will take full control over the IP and any related assets of the Metal Max series.
The future development of the series has yet to be determined, but according to the developer, they will make every effort to create a new future for the fan-favorite 30-year-old Metal Max series. This is certainly huge news, and as someone who lost hope after the cancellation of the latest title in the series, I now have high hopes for what Cygames has planned to revive this beloved series.
The original author and director of the series, Hiroshi Miyaoka, commented the following:
I am pleased to announce that Cygames has now decided to fully take over the rights to the Metal Max franchise and IP. We at the development team feel that this transfer of rights is a great opportunity for the series, which celebrated its 30th anniversary as of last year. As the author of the original work, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to KADOKAWA and Kadokawa Games for their willingness to accept the transfer, and above all, for the warm welcome from Cygames.
Now, as a director of Cygames, I will be working on the reboot of the Metal Max series. As of right now, we are still in the early planning stages, but I hope that the series will be reborn in such a way that it will reach not only the fans of Metal Max, but also RPG fans from all over the world. Please look forward to our developments.
Kenichiro Takaki, a director at Cygames (known for his work in the Senran Kagura series), also commented the following:
Metal Max was one of the many great games that fascinated me during my student days. I feel that this is a challenge for the entire game industry, but that it is also the mission of Cygames, a company that strives to “create the best content possible”. I am very honored to be working on “Metal Max”, and we are hard at work in making it the best title ever. Please look forward to it!
