New ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Showcase Series Debuts With Captain America Combat Deep Dive

Firaxis Games and 2K have begun a new series on YouTube comprising character gameplay showcases for their upcoming strategy title, Marvel’s Midnight Suns. This debut video highlights the iconic Captain America, alternatively known as Steve Rogers.

Captain America primarily utilizes his shield, simultaneously used for defensive and offensive purposes. In fact, one of his skills, “The Best Defense,” gives Steve more Block stat equal to the damage he deals for two turns. Additionally, he can Taunt enemies inciting their aggro. Another of the Captain’s skills, the Brooklyn Handshake, initiates enemy knockback, with the distance growing depending on if they were already hit during that same turn. These notable factors make Captain America a tank-like character who can serve several integral roles on the frontlines of combat.

Friendships between the player character Hunter and other superheroes in the vicinity can be formed. These relationships can grow to empower characters’ combative prowess; in Steve’s case, he’ll learn passive abilities beneficial for protection. Friendship Level 1 is explicitly stated to provide Steve with a set amount of Block at the start of battles, and at Level 2, he’ll begin to gain Block every turn.

One last gameplay mechanic intricately discussed throughout this video is Heroics, a character’s most devastating ability that is only useable if enough Heroism is accumulated. The name of one of Captain America’s Heroics is Spang! which deals significantly more damage to enemies targeting him. This attack would undoubtedly synergize well with strategies revolving around Taunting. Captain America’s most potent and expensive Heroic skill originated from Midnight Sun cards is Shield Charge. Essentially, this skill converts the entirety of his current Block stat into damage output through a line of foes.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns has players assume the role of “The Hunter,” a customizable superhero who joins the crew. Further, players can play as other heroes, including Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Blade, and more. Combat is turn-based, borrowing elements of the developer’s XCOM series, where players will guide units through environments to take down enemies.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on October 7, 2022.
