Tribute Games and Dotemu have teamed up with Marvel Games for MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, a new side-scrolling beat ’em up launching in 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox platforms, and PC via Steam. Set during the high-stakes Annihilation storyline, the game pulls from Marvel’s deep roster of cosmic and street-level heroes. During Summer Game Fest Play Days 2025, we were able to go hands-on with the game, and while 20 minutes wasn’t nearly enough, we are confident in saying arcade beat ’em ups are back.
Tribute has proven itself a leader in the pixel-art revival scene, and their latest project looks to carry that momentum forward with slick animations, tight combat, and an unmistakable respect for classic arcade brawlers.
Hands-On Impressions
Our session dropped us right into the action, and within moments, the game’s rhythm clicked into place. Strikes hit with satisfying weight, combos flowed smoothly, and each character’s unique tools encouraged some kind of experimentation. I went with Wolverine because I knew he would make me look the coolest to the developers who were watching. I just feel like video game Wolverine is always an OP melee character, and that’s all I care about.
Combat feels layered but never overwhelming, except for the general chaos unfolding on screen. Light and heavy attacks link into launchers, while special moves give each character distinct crowd control or mobility options. Enemy design gives just enough telegraphing to reward quick reflexes, and the whole thing plays out at a pace that feels both manageable and exciting.
Tag-Team Tactics
At the heart of the experience is the Cosmic Swap system. You choose two heroes per stage and switch between them whenever you want. This opens the door to extended combos and tactical team-ups. Characters like Spider-Man can pin enemies in place with webs, setting them up for Wolverine to dive in with raw power.
Up to four players can join in through local or online co-op, and the drop-in/drop-out system adjusts the challenge accordingly. We didn’t get a chance to test online features, but couch co-op was responsive and easy to pick up, even though I think I was annoying my partner with how much I was into the visuals.
Visual Punch
Tribute’s pixel art continues to impress. Every character looks hand-crafted with expressive animations that capture each hero’s personality. Spider-Man’s acrobatics, Nova’s energy blasts, and Wolverine’s aggression all read clearly in motion. Backgrounds shift from grounded cityscapes to more surreal cosmic locales, each one layered with detail and kinetic effects that keep the action moving.
It brought me back to X-Men: The Arcade, where each new screen introduced a new environmental gimmick and enemy variation. Hit reactions, particle bursts, and clean UI elements all contribute to making combat legible even when the screen fills with enemies and abilities.
Audio and Presentation
Though I’m sure the audio isn’t final, the game still carries an energetic tone that fits its Saturday morning cartoon roots. Chiptune-inspired music with bold melodies underscored our brawling, and voice lines helped inject some personality without becoming overbearing.
Tribute Games isn’t new to this scene. Their past work, like TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge and Panzer Paladin, proves they know how to blend modern mechanics with retro aesthetics, and I do believe that no indie team does it better. Cosmic Invasion looks to build on that foundation by giving players more flexibility, tighter team mechanics, and a broader license to work with.
Their founders were also behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, so if there’s any studio with the chops to make a Marvel beat ’em up that respects both the license and the genre, it’s this one.
Looking Ahead
There’s still a lot we haven’t seen. How the progression system unfolds, how deep the roster becomes, and whether the mission structure can sustain long play sessions will be key to the full experience. But the core combat already feels strong, and the presentation hits all the right notes.
In just twenty minutes, MARVEL Cosmic Invasion convinced us that the genre still has plenty of room to grow, and Tribute Games is once again at the center of its resurgence.
