Developer Halberd Studios, known for the metroidvania 9 Years of Shadows, has launched a Kickstarter for a new metroidvania project, Mariachi Legends. Set in the heart of Mexico in 1986, this combat-focused experience features the titular gang threatening the town of Santa Mascota.
Protagonist Pablo Cruz is a detective who has agreed to a deal with Death, letting him transform into the La Sombra and enabling him to fight back against the criminals taking over the town. In return, Pablo has to find the man who defied Death and became immortal.
Players can anticipate fast-paced melee combat with various sub-weapons, resulting in distinct combos alongside several abilities and armor. Additionally, the La Espada de Animas sword is at the heart of the experience, capable of summoning the power of a different weapon by exchanging its core. Further, Death will read Pablo Tarot Cards, granting blessings or misfortune at random.
Mexico is stylistically depicted throughout Mariachi Legends via pixel art, with vibrancy, a mariachi-inspired soundtrack, and Mexican cuisine. The lattermost of which will serve practical gameplay benefits.
Mariachi Legends is seeking to reach $51,216 USD pledged by December 7, 2023, at 1:17 PM ET. Currently, the backing is at over $33,000 USD. The game has had almost a year of development.
You can view Mariachi Legends’ official Kickstarter page for additional details regarding the game and tiers. A PC and Nintendo Switch release are planned.
