NieR-Inspired Action RPG ‘Mahou Arms’ Delayed to July as Developer Focuses on Balance and Polish

Mahou Arms will no longer launch its full 1.0 release in April as planned. Developer softmode has delayed the PC release on Steam from April 27, 2026, to July 27, 2026, citing the need for additional polish and balance adjustments ahead of launch.

According to the team, the game is effectively content-complete and fully playable from start to finish. However, recent internal playthroughs highlighted areas that still need refinement. The developer stated that releasing in April would result in a solid experience, but the extra three months will allow them to address smaller issues that affect the overall feel of the game.

One of the main areas being reworked is progression balance. A newly implemented leveling and skill point system changes how players grow stronger over time, which has introduced issues in pacing. Early sections have become more difficult due to weaker starting stats, while some enemy encounters feel inconsistent depending on when they appear. Adjusting this balance is expected to take additional time.

The delay also gives the team space to resolve lingering bugs, including rare but critical issues that can halt player progress. While these problems don’t occur frequently, the developer noted that even a single progression-blocking bug can significantly impact a single-player experience.

Beyond fixes, softmode is using the added development time to expand parts of the 1.0 release that were previously considered optional. This includes voice acting, additional cutscenes, and new enemy types. The team also teased an extra feature unrelated to gameplay that they plan to share ahead of launch.

As previously announced, Mahou Arms is a character-action hack-and-slash inspired by titles like NieR, placing players in control of magical girl operatives from the GARDA organization as they fight against an alien force known as the Locks. The game has been in early access for several years, gradually adding story content, playable characters, and side activities.

Following the delay, early access bonuses will remain available through the new July release date. The developer also confirmed plans to continue supporting the game with updates and additional content after version 1.0 launches.

A final development update is scheduled within the next couple of weeks, which will showcase some of the new additions coming to the game.
