When describing something as “the gift that keeps on giving”, it implies that something continues to provide benefits over time. It might seem farcical to utilize that statement for a puzzle game, as Lorelei and the Laser Eyes require the utmost effort and patience from the player in order to move forward. Each time I solved a challenging mystery, a wave of dopamine rushed through my head. However, that dopamine rush easily came to a screeching halt as a plethora of mental blocks and puzzles still persisted.

No introduction is given to you as you start off lost in the woods, standing next to your car. As you explore the forest, you get the feeling that this sense of mystery will only continue to grow stronger as you search for what to do and where to go. When you finally reach a hotel and get assistance from a cute dog, you embark on a journey chock-full of alluring puzzles and bewildering storylines.

Navigating through this hotel is a bizarre experience but one full of intrigue and curiosity. You realize that time and space do not work normally here. Throughout your search, you find documents and artifacts from numerous centuries, yet with technologies from the modern era. You come upon doors that may lead you to parts of the hotel you didn’t think they would. There’s no sense of direction or time, enhancing the mysterious atmosphere significantly.

Speaking of which, the ambiance within the game feels quite unsettling. Each room and area has its own arrangement of set pieces and puzzles that bring the player to question the setting and overarching narrative. It’s hard not to feel isolated and lost. The audio design is both mesmerizing and baffling. The sounds that play as you work your way through puzzles or discover new riddles are satisfying, yet the near-silence that permeates your exploration can feel a bit daunting. It leaves you alone with your thoughts, which is fine to a degree, but it can start to feel overwhelmingly quiet in some moments, leaving me yearning for more of a backdrop. Some rooms have photographs you can use to heighten the ambiance, but they’re pretty limited.

Though each model may not be extreme in detail, the minimalism keeps each scene easy on the eyes, allowing the player to not get distracted by external visual stimuli. As the title suggests, the laser eyes are an intermittent effect you encounter depending on the puzzle and situation. This creates a glitch-like effect that keeps you on your toes, wondering what may be around that calls for your attention.

In fact, you’ll find yourself locked in fairly often. There are hundreds of different puzzles and riddles throughout the hotel, which may feel heavy at times. So many of these puzzles require logical reasoning, spatial awareness, pattern recognition, mathematics, and much more. Because of this, I urge you to have a notebook to jot some clues down, as it can quickly become a jumbled web of information.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is not an easy labyrinth to delve into. It might seem weird to recommend this, but this is a game where you should put the controller down from time to time. It’s amazing what a fresh mind can do for you when reapproaching a roadblock of a riddle. If you’re willing to put in the effort and time, there’s so much that the hotel can provide you, but the difficulty curve can be quite steep. Some puzzles are quite straightforward, but others require some heavy contemplation. If you’re a puzzle enthusiast, this is right up your alley, but I can definitely see some folks losing their fervor to seek out all the answers.

To both its advantage and its slight detriment, the controls and gameplay aspects are simple and straightforward. You walk around with the joystick, and you interact with everything using any of the gamepad buttons, essentially utilizing two buttons overall. When you’re not near a glowing object, pressing a button pulls up a menu where you can access your inventory and reference materials. For the most part, these controls are very intuitive, and the ease of access is appreciated.

My only gripe with these controls, albeit minuscule, is that they drag out the length of certain actions as you have to be more manual and precise. You have to make sure you’re not near an item when pressing a button if you want to check your menu. In addition, if you do accidentally click on an object, like a puzzle box, you can’t just exit out of the screen as you have to enter in an input first. It’s not a glaring issue, but it can add to the cumbersome nature of the game.

Unraveling the Intricate Narrative

Regarding the narrative, there is quite a wonderful and rich tale to be told, albeit confusing in nature. Each area that you uncover unlocks new lore for you to delve into. Though the pacing is nice, it can feel a bit difficult to follow, especially as the structure of the story continuously adds in more mysteries before finally having you piece some things together.

While it does complement the gameplay’s structure of incessantly adding more riddles, it’s also a lot to take in at once. It’s difficult to convey how interwoven the web becomes, but just know this is not a game you can casually jump into. Despite that, I found myself completely enthralled. If I got stuck, which I absolutely did, I wanted to come back. I’m utterly magnetized by the creativity and attention to detail that is ever-present within the confines of the hotel.

The monochrome wonder and mystique are gratifying with each code you crack, but there’s a boatload of codes left to solve, some more meticulous than others.
