WereBuff Studio has announced Kumarn: The Wandering Spirit, a horror adventure rooted in Thai folklore, coming first to PC via Steam with console versions planned for the future. The game will be playable at Gamescom 2025 in the Thai Pavilion (Hall 3.2 B010 #8).
Set in a distorted version of 1970s Thailand, Kumarn: The Wandering Spirit follows Kumarn, a lost spirit child separated from his sacred zebra companion, Zeb. Kidnapped by dark forces, he must navigate nightmarish renditions of Thai landmarks while avoiding ghosts drawn from centuries-old myths, including Mae Nak, the Krasue, and Phi Ta Khon.
Players will explore six chapters inspired by temples, graveyards, shrines, and haunted villages. Stealth and puzzle-solving play a central role, with environments designed to force quick thinking during encounters. Zeb, the zebra spirit, aids in survival, offering guidance through hostile territory.
The game uses Unreal Engine to recreate eerie versions of real Thai attractions, blending authentic cultural references with horror-focused visual and audio design. Storytelling takes a minimalist approach, relying on atmosphere and environmental details rather than heavy dialogue.
Kumarn: The Wandering Spirit is the debut project from Bangkok-based WereBuff Studio, aiming to introduce Thai cultural horror to a global audience. A Steam page is now live for those looking to add it to their wishlist.
