Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] Has Officially Shut Down Online Play and Services in Japan

Today marks the end of Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] in Japan. The mobile game has concluded any aspect of online play and will now be an offline title once the app can be relaunched. In its offline mode, the game will cease being a conventional mobile experience. There will be no gameplay of any kind, as Union χ[Cross] will be a glorified theater mode.

Players will be able to customize their character’s appearance, but no other gameplay features will remain intact. The theater mode will at least be there to preserve the numerous story cutscenes, from the Disney filler to the lore-centric events in Daybreak Town.

The final story update for the title launched in Japan and the West, though the latter received it a week and a half later than the former. Regardless, Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] is now a forever-altered experience. As with all mobile titles, once they end service, there is no way to experience them back in their online days. While there are several fans who despise Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross]  for a variety of reasons, I somewhat included, it was still instilled with an absolutely fantastic narrative that is easily one of the franchise’s best.

The global version of Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] will be shutting down online services on June 29, 2021.

Here is hoping that Square Enix is working on an HD remaster of Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross] and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, either with fully revamped gameplay or reworked cinematics. Only time will tell.
