Among the various releases of curious titles in 2021, there were many that I was looking forward to. However, Kimagure Temptation wasn’t one of them. But, I’m a simple man; I saw the hot succubus, which was enough to play this game. After playing, though, I can honestly say that there’s much more to this visual novel than its busty heroine.
Kimagure Temptation begins when our protagonist, a diviner (onmyouji in Japanese) named Haruhisa Tatsumi, moves into a shady building to fulfill his master’s request. A curse plagues the area, poisoning the air with miasma that makes people unable to stay inside, and it can even kill them. But this situation isn’t so tough for him, as the young man is resistant to all sorts of spiritual curses.
He isn’t supposed to investigate the place alone, though. Luckily he’s with his partner Anneliese, a very attractive devil whose default outfit is rather skimpy, which she affirms to be related to her nature as a descendant of Lilith. While regular people can’t see her, she still often changes clothes on a whim.
Together the duo will have the chance to investigate the building in detail to find out about the people who lived there. Four girls act as angels and believe in weird teachings, lingering in the building even after death. While alive, their circumstances weren’t ordinary at all, and it’s up to the player to figure out the best way to deal with the situation.
Besides interacting with each of the tenants, players can investigate the apartment by clicking on multiple objects. However, there aren’t many options as the areas are limited, and it’s only possible to do it sometimes. Thus, rather than a full-fledged point-and-click experience, it’s just an extra layer of interactivity.
The story is surprisingly good, offering a mystery that manages to be compelling even with a somewhat predictable twist. In addition, it makes fun of various supernatural cliches while still making a competent argument for its worldbuilding. It’s also important to keep in mind that the reasoning behind the curse deals with themes of abuse which may be a sensitive topic for some people.
However, most of the time, Kimagure Temptation is a comfortable experience. Anneliese and Haruhisa have great chemistry, even though the idea of a succubus tempting a young virgin is a cliche. She’s adorable, their interactions feel genuine, and they naturally grow on one another.
One interesting aspect of the title is that Anneliese is animated using the E-mote technology from M2. She’s very expressive and constantly bouncing all over, which some people may associate with how vtubers are animated. Though sex scenes are also animated and very detailed, the all-ages CGs are static with occasional effects. By the way, players have to change settings to “Adult” to play the game with the steamier scenes on.
Kimagure Temptation is a surprisingly solid title that offers not only erotic antics but also a compelling mystery, golden pieces of humor, and cute interactions. This is a complete package that, despite its short length, was rather enjoyable. It may only have one heroine, but Anneliese plays the role valiantly and becomes all one needs, but perhaps I’m just under her spell. Oh, well.
