IGN Entertainment has acquired the Gamer Network portfolio, including notable gaming websites such as Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, VG247, and Rock Paper Shotgun, in a significant industry move. This acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, was announced on May 21, 2024, and has resulted in some redundancies across the UK-based organization.
Gamer Network’s extensive portfolio also includes shares in Outside Xbox, Digital Foundry, and Hookshot, the latter of which operates Nintendolife, PushSquare, PureXbox, and Time Extension. The acquisition by IGN Entertainment, a division of Ziff Davis that encompasses IGN, MapGenie, HowLongToBeat, and Humble Bundle, marks a substantial expansion of IGN’s digital media presence.
The websites were acquired from ReedPop, known for organizing PAX and New York Comic-Con, which had initially bought Gamer Network in 2018. However, UK-based events EGX and MCM, along with the digital brand Popverse, will remain with ReedPop and are not included in the sale.
Posts to X (formally Twitter) have shown that this change has impacted the jobs of skilled writers. We hope they find good homes.
