Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen has left the studio after 31 years, ending a career that stretched from its formation in 1995 through its latest release, Saros. Former deputy managing director Sami “Haxu” Hakala has succeeded him as managing director.
Kuittinen confirmed that August 31, 2026, marks his final day at Housemarque. He has spent 33 years in the games industry, beginning with Terramarque in 1993 before co-founding Housemarque with Harri Tikkanen two years later.
The leadership transition had been underway for several months. Hakala officially became Housemarque’s managing director on July 1, while Kuittinen remained through the end of August to assist Hakala and the studio’s leadership team during the handover.
Kuittinen plans to take an extended break from the games industry beginning in September. He does not intend to leave the industry permanently, however, and expects to continue attending trade shows and awards events. He is also interested in eventual mentoring or consulting work.
Kuittinen closed his farewell by thanking Tikkanen, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Housemarque employees, and colleagues throughout the wider games industry.
