Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Creative Director Explains Reasoning for Simple & Technical Inputs Having Identical Properties

The Creative Director of the upcoming Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Tetsuya Fukuhara, has shared a lengthy comment detailing the team’s justification for the simple inputs having the same properties as technical inputs.

Essentially, Fukuhara understands the concern that this design choice of not giving simple inputs any disadvantages may upset veteran players. But he feels that this is the “perfect game to dare such game design.” He wants to diminish the hurdle for beginner players regarding needing to learn and perform involved inputs to get the most out of special attacks as much as possible. The team has made it possible to disable technical inputs in the settings to prevent accidental misfires, too.

Ultimately, the belief here is that the implemented equal footing for simple and technical inputs in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will level the playing field, bringing the title to a vaster audience at the loss of technical depth. Still, Fukuhara does not believe this will make the experience shallow.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising features the original 24-character Versus cast alongside several new ones. A newly implemented mechanic will be Ultimate Skills, which are more powerful iterations of Versus’ Plus Skills, enabling new combo extension opportunities and ways to punish opponents. Additionally, a new Story mode will be available in a more convenient fashion, abolishing item collection, growth elements, and some quest battles. It will be an abridged version of Versus’ 50 RPG Mode chapters, too.

This release will also feature enhanced graphics, an improved online lobby with a vaster environment, and Grand Bruise Legends! Mode, comprising minigames such as obstacle course Rising Royale and Gold Brick Hoarder.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam in 2023.
