Publisher NIS America recently interviewed Whittington Wiman, also known as Zerker, regarding the upcoming localizations of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure. He was the Project Lead and Lead Editor for the Geofront fan translations of Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure. For those unaware, these extensive fan-translation efforts are being used as the bases for these games’ official releases.
Zerker discusses his roots with the Geofront team’s efforts and why the Crossbell duology was such a compelling set of experiences for him. Specifically regarding the changes being made in the official localizations, since many are curious about that, Zerker provided the following comment:
“You know, we never expected everything to be exactly the same as our patch. Of course, their team is going to make decisions that we might not totally agree with, but that’s the magic of localization. Different teams are always going to have different ideas about how to treat certain things, like terms, names, speech patterns, and so on—and that’s fine. NIS America was kind enough to allow some editors to join a Slack server to discuss different choices made, which was generous of them. Overall, we’re just excited that the Crossbell titles are getting the love, care, and professional release that they deserve.”
If you’re intent on playing these new releases or are simply curious, I highly recommend reading the full interview over on NIS America’s blog.
Speaking of Geofront, the team currently fan translated a super early Nihon Falcom-developed game, Computer the Golf.
