Developer rkanpixel has opened the public playtest for its upcoming pixel art metroidvania Frogreign. Available now on Steam, the test includes over an hour of early content and introduces players to the game’s opening area, The Celestial Well, along with an early version of the intro cutscene.
Frogreign follows Rill, a frog prince searching for his missing sister amid ancient spirits and royal conspiracies. Players will swing, grapple, and leap through handcrafted fantasy environments, using Rill’s tongue to latch onto surfaces and enemies alike. The loop comprises platforming, combat, and puzzles, with a focus on swift movement and a traversal system that rewards momentum and precision.
Alongside exploration, players can unlock magical abilities with the help of Rill’s companion Lumi, opening up new combat options and traversal paths. The world features frame-by-frame pixel animation, an SNES-inspired soundtrack, and 2D lighting effects.
The Frogreign playtest is available now through the game’s Steam page. A playtest trailer is also available, offering a first look at the game’s tone, style, and mechanics.
