Free Rose of Versailles-Inspired Visual Novel ‘Phantom of the Black Rose Revue: Act 1’ Now Available on PC

Developer Yamino has released Phantom of the Black Rose Revue: Act 1 on PC through their itch.io account, with Windows, Mac and Linux editions. This is a free visual novel inspired by the classic shoujo manga Rose of Versailles, the well-known Japanese theatre troupe Takarazuka Revue and The Phantom of the Opera. The game is one of the entries of this year’s annual Spooktober Visual Novel Jam.

Phantom of the Black Rose Revue tells the story of Chihiro Sato, a 22-year-old woman who has become a rising star at the Black Rose Revue. Though her rapid career evolution would be reason to celebrate, Chihiro also has to deal with mysterious letters that she has continued to receive since her student years, which grow ever more obsessive with her talents.

The game’s page teases this mystery, her rise to even bigger heights in her career and romance as possible outcomes to the story. This first act introduces the cast and mysteries of the Black Rose Revue world. Psychological distress and threats are some of the content warnings for the story. Altogether, it includes 19 animated CGs, and a soundtrack with 13 original music pieces. The music is composed by Leaf Let and the art is made by Yamino.
