Final Fantasy XVI Launching June 2023; New Trailer, Characters, Gameplay Info, Pre-Orders Available

During The Game Awards 2022, Square Enix unveiled a new trailer for the highly anticipated action JRPG Final Fantasy XVI, which also finally revealed the game’s release date, June 22, 2023. Pre-orders are available today.

A new character was introduced, Cidolfus Telamon. His profile is translated below. Thanks to our team’s Ryuji:

Cidolfus, also known as Cid, is a soldier-turned-outlaw who strives to protect persecuted bearers and dominants at the mercy of the government, advocating the realization of a “place where anyone can die on their own terms”. He is also active in many other areas, such as researching the looming threat that is undermining the continent.

Cid also became the Dominant of the Eikon Ramuh, shortly after awakening on the shores of Valisthea. When rising the ranks of the Royal Waloeder Army, he would eventually encounter Benedikta Harman. Lastly, as his namesake would suggest, he is a man of science, researching how one can live in the deadlands.

Jill Warrick shared two renders and a character profile, viewable below:

As a child, she was sent by the northern tribes to Rosalia as a sign of peace and was sent to live with the Rosfields. She grew up with Clive and Joshua, and they became like brother and sister. She was a kind-hearted girl who cared for the two of them, and was a good friend to them. However, due to a strange fate, she eventually awakened as Shiva’s Dominant.

Torgal received two renders and a profile, viewable below:

Torgal is a wolf from the northern part of the continent. He was raised in the Rosfield household after Clive and Joshua’s father, Archduke Elwin, brought him home after he was found to be separated from his pack during an expedition to the north. Torgal survived a terrible tragedy in his childhood and was eventually reunited with Clive, who became his trustworthy companion on his arduous journey.

New screenshots were shared from the official Japanese website, viewable below:

In the ability tree, when you press L3, you automatically upgrade slots, likely depending on recommendations. The touchpad will reset all ability points. R3 states ability protection. Right-stick allows for zooming. Triangle enables greater detailed analysis.

Torgal is Clive’s animal buddy and can attack enemies, restore Clive’s health and do supportive actions. It’s implied that you can control Torgal, but this is not yet confirmed.

Various party members will join Clive throughout the game, and the ones with you will change as you progress. Plus, they are all AI-controlled.

You can view the official trailer below:

Final Fantasy XVI is set to be a more action-heavy entry than its predecessors, with a Devil May Cry V designer even taking the helm. Throughout the title, players will control the protagonist Clive, as he confronts various Dominants, humans who have been cursed with the power to become Eikons.

Clive is the “First Shield of Rosaria,” sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, who’s the Dominant of Phoenix. However, following tragedy, Clive swears revenge on the Dark Eikon Ifrit.

The producer, Naoki Yoshida, describes this game as akin to his experience with the first Final Fantasy, as “playing the lead in an epic motion picture.” The reasoning for this title’s action-oriented approach and more classical fantasy setting was to “appeal to as wide a range of gamers as possible.” Moreover, “there will be a “comprehensive support system in place for players who aren’t too confident with action games.”
