Final Fantasy VII Day Officially Recognized in Japan; Director Shares Anniversary Message

Square Enix has announced that January 31 has officially been recognized as Final Fantasy VII day by Japan’s Anniversary Association. This news coincides with the original Final Fantasy VII’s 26th Anniversary.

To commemorate this noteworthy occasion, the original Final Fantasy VII director and the Producer for the Remake effort, Yoshinori Kitase, shared a message to fans emphasizing his delight in this accomplishment, along with brief reminiscing.

Kitase’s message is as follows:

“The 31st of January 1997, the day that Final Fantasy VII came out, was not just a significant day for the Final Fantasy series, but also marked when so many big things started moving for those of us who worked on the game.

I remember being overwhelmed at the breakneck speed with which video game technology was evolving, but also dreaming big things for the future.

With the establishment of this official anniversary day, I will now always remember these things, and hold them dearly in my heart.”

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a modernized retelling of the original Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, a prequel to the game that initiated this beloved sub-series. Players control Zack, a hyperactive and determined SOLDIER yearning to become not only First Class, but also a hero in his own right. Combat utilizes real-time action elements alongside the innovative “Digital Mind Wave” system, used to perform special attacks called Limit Breaks and achieve other notable feats.

Late last year, I wrote an article discussing the prevalent false assumptions people have about Tetsuya Nomura, including how many believe he wrote Crisis Core when he, in fact, did not.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is now available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The Closed Beta Test for Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis has been delayed to Summer 2023.
