Fatal Fury City of the Wolves Producer Says a New ‘The Last Blade’ Would Have to be a Reboot, Remake, or Different Genre

The Japanese outlet 4Gamer recently interviewed Yasuyuki Oda from SNK about the upcoming Fatal Fury City of the Wolves. The interview covered new details about the new fighting game, but the interviewer was able to ask about a long-dormant series in the company’s long list of IPs, The Last Blade.

During the interview, the question arose, “Is there any possibility of working on The Last Blade (Bakumatsu Rouman: Gekka no Kenshi)?”

Oda-san responded, “Yes, there is. However, it is a title that has already been finished beautifully, so if we were to do it, it would probably be a reboot or remake. Or, it we might have to completely change the genre.”

The Last Blade is a series of fighting games for Arcades and the Neo-Geo, with The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny releasing as the third and final entry in 20oo. Oda-san’s response touches on the fact that he feels they have concluded the story, even though some of the characters still appear in their other IPs, including Samurai Shodown.

However, a reboot of this edo-period fighter could potentially bring more fans to the series. Still, Oda-san is right, there’s no room for a large-budget fighting game series right now, but perhaps an entry in the action genre could provide a nice pace for these characters to continue in the series.
