Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse Discusses Story-Heavy Locations; New Screenshots & Producer + Director Messages

Koei Tecmo has shared new gameplay details for the upcoming horror adventure Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, discussing the Haunted Infirmary and Sanatorium.

The former is where Dr. Haibara’s experimental trials to cure “Moonlight Syndrome” became fatal, with the site now in ruins. On the other hand, Rogetsu Hall is a Sanitorium built for those who have contracted the Syndrome. Only “special guests” are allowed to enter this hotel-like building attached to the infirmary proper. Further, the locals refer to the infirmary as the “old building” and the Sanitorium as the “new building.”

Another notable location is the Cape Tsukiyomi Lighthouse, the closest point to the moon on the island. Those who worshipped the moon considered this spot quite significant, with an ancient shrine even built on top of the lighthouse.

The Yomotsuki Residence is yet another noteworthy area, as it’s the birthplace of one of the missing girls, Ruka Minazuki, as well as the home of her father, the mask-maker Soya Yomotsuki. He has developed an obsession with perfecting the “Mask of the Lunar Eclipse,” and Ruka’s mom, Sayaka Minazuki, accuses him of being at least partially responsible for their daughter’s disappearance.

New screenshots of the game were shared alongside its English key art, viewable via our gallery below:

Lastly, English-subtitled video messages from Producer Fukuya and Director Shibata were shared, viewable below:

Taking place a decade after five girls disappeared during a festival at Rōgetsu Isle, an island in Southern Japan, these same girls ended up suffering from memory loss. However, they somehow remember a single melody and a masked woman dancing in the moonlight. Two of these rescued girls are now deceased, and the three remaining ones vow to uncover the mysteries surrounding their bizarre deaths.

Players will explore western-styled mansions and abandoned hospitals while relying on one’s own flashlight and the moonlight. Newspaper articles and notes will help unveil the island’s past and progress the narrative. The iconic Fatal Frame device, the Camera Obscura, makes a return, with the girls using it to seal the powers of vengeful ghosts. It will also be customizable to better combat the various supernatural threats roaming the land.

This release will include a new Photo Mode, ” new and altered costumes, and enhanced graphics including the improved rendering of shadows and light, delivering a more immersive and frightening experience.” Additionally, in-game movies and character models have been “brushed up.”

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on March 9, 2023.
