With the release of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water on the horizon, video game producer Keisuke Kikuchi shared some insight into the newest feature, Photo Mode.
Kikuchi-san shares, “The addition of the photo mode is a first for the Fatal Frame series. The concept for this mode is to allow players to create their own ghost photography. By pressing a specific button while playing the game, you can enter the photo mode. You can place ghost and human characters, set their pose, adjust their position, and take pictures of them. You can also adjust the lens and frames for the photo, and use the photo capabilities of the platform’s hardware and save pictures of your screen. I really look forward to seeing all of the unique photos everyone takes once the game launches.”
With the growing number of costumes available, this is going to be a feature that players can use to spend some more time with the characters and share some clever setups. It seems like the team is allowing players to go further than previous photo mode interactions given that this game is all about taking pictures.
The photo elements of gameplay extend into a feature Camera Obscura, which Kikuchi-san explains, “The Camera Obscura can be used to repel ghosts through its photography, but it can also allow the player to find clues by taking pictures of thoughts that are left behind. Wandering ghosts lurking around the map can also be recorded with the Camera Obscura, which can help you in your exploration.”
During gameplay, players assume the role of Yuri Kozukata, Ren Hojo, and Miu Hinasaki as they venture through Mt. Hikami to find someone who disappeared. To overcome the spirits housed in the mountain’s waters, they will have to master the Camera Obscura – a unique camera that can deal damage to ghosts upon taking a photo.
Each successful shot will cause a spirit to emit Spirit Fragments and if players are able to capture an image of the ghost and these mysterious fragments in the same frame, they will unleash a high-damage Fatal Frame attack. Upgrading the camera’s parts, such as equipping a stronger lens or changing out the film, allows more powerful images to be taken, giving players more protection as they venture further up the mountain.
When a ghost has been defeated, the camera is able to perform the Glancing ability to uncover the ghost’s past – helping to uncover the truth behind the disappearances on the mountain.
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 28, 2021.
